Making Ghee: The World’s Greatest Cannabis Butter| 0
Hi! My name is Kiera from Ambrosia and I’m here to show you how to make Ghee Butter, the world’s greatest cannabis butter. Ghee Butter is a wonderfully delicious butter originating from India. It’s a style of clarified butter renowned for its flavor, nutritional benefits, and medicinal qualities. Basically, it’s the perfect cannabis companion!
You might be wondering, “Why do I need to know how to make edibles when I can just buy edibles?” Fair question. My philosophy is if you give a man an edible you get him high for a day; teach a man how to make an edible you get him high for life.
When it comes to cannabis cooking, showing up prepared and ready is half the battle. Here’s what you’ll need:
- ¼ oz of Cannabis
- ¼ lb (1 stick) of Unsalted Butter
- Airtight container (Mason Jar)
- Cooking Pot (Double Boiler)
Got all that? Great! Let’s get started.
Step 1: Decarbing
If you want to release the full potential of cannabis and its many benefits, I recommend you take the time to go through the decarboxylation process. You might be asking “What is decarboxylation, Kiera?” Great question! I’ll tell you.
Decarboxylation (decarbing) is the process in which we release the psychoactive properties of cannabis. Raw cannabis contains THCA, a non-psychoactive compound that cannot cross into the brain. With the application of heat, THCA breaks down and releases THC, the psychoactive properties that make you feel high.
Now that we’re caught up, let’s activate that THC!
Start by preheating the oven to 245° F. While your oven slowly grows hotter, begin to break up the cannabis flowers/buds into smaller pieces with your hands or grinder. (Take a second to appreciate the smell of those broken down buds. Smell that? Those are terpenes, our delicious friends.) Now place the broken up cannabis pieces evenly on a baking sheet with a rim to prevent pieces from falling (Don’t waste that bud!).
Place baking sheet in the oven for 45 minutes and flip every 10 minutes in order to evenly toast.
Step 2: Melt Butter
While the cannabis decarbs in the oven, let’s get started on the butter. Melt the ¼ lb butter in a pan (or double boiler that will prevent the butter from burning) using low heat. As the butter melts, some froth will form on the top. You will want to remove the froth by skimming the top with a spoon and stirring occasionally. Repeat until no more froth appears and you’re left with nothing but a golden elixir. Lower heat to a simmer.
Step 3: Add Decarb
Now that you have your golden butter elixir let’s check in on that decarboxylated cannabis (decarb). Remove your baking sheet from the oven and take a look. Your decarb should be dark in color now, a medium brown, and dried out. Allow to cool for a few minutes before removing from the tray. Be careful as decarb will be extremely crumbly as your handle it.
Alright. We have our decarboxylated cannabis and our golden butter elixir. Let’s combine them. Slowly add decarb to simmering butter, stirring often. Once the decarb and butter are properly and evenly blended, allow the mixture to simmer for 60 minutes, slightly stirring every 15 minutes.
Step 4: Strain
Come back and check on your mixture. It should be dark brown and gooey. Line your cheesecloth in your airtight container (or mason jar) and secure it with a rubberband. Pour the infused Ghee mixture out of the pan and into your airtight container. Allow to strain and cool for a few minutes.
Step 5: Squeeze
After it’s cooled for a few minutes, take a spoon and squeeze out every bit of Ghee from the Cheesecloth (don’t waste that Ghee!). This may seem laboring and tedious, but you’ll be happy you got every bit possible once you’re finished.
Step 6: Finish
Guess what? You’re done! Congratulations! You are now the proud owner and maker of a mason jar of delicious Ghee Butter, the world’s greatest cannabis butter known to man. After all the hard work you put into the cooking process, I think you deserve a quick taste. Go ahead. You earned it. I’ll wait. Did you try it yet? Tasty, right?
Now that you have Ghee Butter you can use it to make cookies, chocolate, cupcakes, pies, and any other of your favorite desserts into cannabis edibles. Be sure to come back and visit me here every Friday for more recipes and cooking tips.
