Who Are the Most Influential Cannabis Consumers?| 0
For the fourth year in a row, one of the nation’s leading marijuana policy reform organizations has released a list of what it views as the top 50 most influential marijuana consumers.
Topping the list, as usual, is President Barack Obama. Also included are current presidential candidates from both parties, entertainers like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and even conservative media personalities Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.
It is important to clarify the criteria for being included on the list, which was compiled by the Marijuana Policy Project: One need not be a current marijuana user to be listed but has to have admitted doing so at least once. And inclusion on the list doesn’t necessarily mean that the person supports legalization. The list is based on the same criteria used by Out Magazine to produce its “Power 50” list of LGBT Americans. Thus, MPP says, the choices were based on “power to influence cultural and social attitudes, political means clout, individual wealth, and a person’s media profile,” not on whether list members are current consumers or even supporters of reform.
“About one out of every two Americans has used marijuana, including a whole lot of very successful people,” Mason Tvert, MPP’s director of communications, said in a press release. “We hope this list will make people question some of the anti-marijuana propaganda they’ve been hearing for so long. Millions of adults enjoy consuming marijuana for many of the same reasons that adults enjoy consuming alcohol. The only thing that makes marijuana consumers more likely to become ‘losers’ are the legal penalties they face just for using it.”
Other list members, pictured below, include Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, LeBron James, Jennifer Lawrence and Matt Damon.
